A lawsuit Has Been Filed Against Garth Brooks by a Former Hair-And-Makeup Artist Who Alleges Sexual Assault and Battery
A lawsuit has been filed
against Garth Brooks, the country music star, by a woman identified as
"Jane Roe." The woman claims she worked as a hairstylist and makeup
artist for Brooks and accuses him of sexual assault and battery.
According to the complaint, filed in a
California state court on Thursday and obtained by multiple media outlets, the
alleged sexual assault and battery incidents involving Garth Brooks took place
in 2019. The woman claims she was raped by Brooks during a work trip.
In a statement to CNN on
Thursday, Brooks said he had been facing threats, lies, and extortion attempts,
with people demanding large sums of money from him.
Brooks said, "Any
payment used to silence someone, no matter the amount, is hush money. That
suggests I am admitting to behavior I am incapable of – reprehensible acts that
no human should ever do to another." He added, "We filed a lawsuit
against this person almost a month ago to address the extortion and defamation
of character. We filed anonymously to protect both families."
Before Roe filed the
lawsuit, an anonymous celebrity plaintiff, now known to be Brooks, had
attempted to silence Roe from publicly repeating her allegations and vehemently
denied the claims, according to a previous complaint he had filed anonymously.
The lawsuit indicates that
Roe began providing hair and makeup services for Brooks in 2017. She also
mentioned that she was first hired to do hair and makeup for his wife, Trisha
Yearwood, in 1999.
Representatives for Yearwood
for comment:
Douglas H. Wigdor, Roe's
attorney, said in a statement on Friday: "I cannot discuss settlement
negotiations, but Brooks' claim that he was unwilling to pay millions is simply
false. We are very confident in our case, and over time, the public will see
his true character rather than his carefully crafted image."
The lawsuit accuses Brooks
of not only sexual assault and battery but also repeatedly exposing himself,
discussing sexual topics and sharing sexual fantasies with Roe, changing his
clothes in front of Roe, and sending sexually explicit text messages.
The lawsuit claims that during one
alleged incident in 2019, Roe was at Brooks' home for work when he walked out
of the shower naked, grabbed her hands, forced them onto his genitals, and used
sexually explicit and vulgar language towards her.
The lawsuit alleges that
during a work trip to Los Angeles in May 2019, Brooks raped Roe in a hotel room
while he was there for a Grammy tribute performance.
The lawsuit alleges that
Brooks and Roe traveled to Los Angeles on Brooks’ private jet.
The complaint mentions that "Usually
there were others on Brooks' private jet, but this time, Ms. Roe and Brooks
were the only two passengers." It also states that "Once in Los
Angeles at the hotel, Ms. Roe was astonished to find that Brooks had booked a
hotel suite with only one bedroom and she didn't have a separate room."
The complaint states that
once they arrived at the hotel suite, Roe alleges that the country singer
"appeared in the doorway to the bedroom, completely naked." Roe's
complaint also states that she felt "trapped in the room alone with
Brooks."
According to the complaint, after the alleged rape,
Brooks continued to share his sexual fantasies with Roe more frequently and
physically assaulted her. Brooks also repeatedly mentioned "having a
threesome" with his wife.
